Beekeeping doesn't have to be complicated and confusing. Let's break down the steps, so you can learn how to keep bees & have fun doing it.
From getting started beekeeping to selling your honey, I explain what to do and tricks I learned along the way.
I started keeping bees as a hobby 13 years ago in PA, and was hooked! A few years later I started working for a commercial apiary and later built my own apiary.
I hope I can help you avoid some of the beginner mistakes I made, so you can ENJOY beekeeping.

How to Help Your Bees in the Summer Heat | What Honeybees Do When It's Hot Out
My grandparents have a hive forming in their breezeway and there isn’t a rescue near me so I’m going to be trying to start a hive. Thank you for this!
You CRUSHED it! Helpful video, thanks!
a lof of queens over the years will head to the very bottom of a frame and as you rotate it to view the other side, they transition to the other side, lol. Its like the light is chasing them. A lot do jump to the bottom of the box as well.
Bees are gift from our creator Allah to human. All praises and worships go to Allah.
I’m a new beekeeper and I just subscribed! Thank you for simplifying everything 😎😎💪💪
Question what about feeding dry pollen like ultrabee ? I myself have an open feeder and I watch them buzz it sitting in a field
How are you not getting stung without protection on your arms?
👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀
Really informative, thanks for your help on behalf of Australian beekeepers.
You're welcome!
Really cool video and great delivery... punchy, happy... great way to start learning. I started my first hive by extracting honey bees from my house... now the real fun begins. Appreciate the vid and encouragement! 🙂
Hi, when adding new frames to the boxes to avoid swarming is there a specific type of frame we should be swapping out with (the old one that is in the box). Like a honey frame, brood frame, etc, thanks.
Very interesting
Over here in North Carolina. I had queen excluders on in spring in the flow, and my bees wouldn't build above it. i pulled them off, and they started drawing. So i agree with you. My queen excluder now is capped honey in the super i leave for the bees. Thank you for sharing.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing. I don't like to say things like queen excluders keep bea from going into the super because I have no concrete proof to back it up, but I'm not a fan of them.
YOUR box looks like its about to fall over
Awesome info, as always! Thanks, Laryssa! -Dusty
I don't want to be insulting but if there is ever a animated talking bee, I can't imagine a better voice actor for the queen bee than Laryssa. She is what a talking bee should sound like!
thats hilarious
Hah!
Nicely stated and that’s a compliment!❤
Hello! I love your videos and i have learned a lot with them. Thank you from Portugal
You are welcome!
Thanks
You are amazing, girl! Thank you! I just installed a nuc three days ago but started with watching your videos about a month ago, now that i have the colony, I realized I have a lot more watching to do haha! Thank you for being awesome
Great Great! Video💥👏🏾💥 I really learned a lot about checker boarding. This was the best explanation that I have heard so thanks a lot 🥰
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. Great video on lots on subjects. Your schooling shared and the lessons with tips from your own experiences at work and living in Hawaii on how a new person or advanced one on the way of helping and building our bees up along is always a welcome to hear about or see. Management of Honeybees can be so rewarding as any other animal husbandry that I had the chance to encounter while raising a family with wildlife and livestock around while my kids grew up in the mountains. A life with Beekeeping and being proactive with them was a favorite and still is. Thanks
Great video very informative.
You are right in that I too use somewhat smaller round holes like 3/4" to 1-1/4" inch in the top of my boxes for ventilation and heat control. For both of my medium 10 frame honey supers and 10 frame double deep brood chambers, I use wooden cleats 3/4" x 2-1/4" x 16-1/4" front and back as my hand holds. That gives me a better grip to pick up boxes and stand them up as I do inspections. It also provides the bees with a landing place to stop before going into the hive, a second to rest, to prepare to go out foraging, or give the chance to those who are guarding or fanning a little. I drill the holes in the middle or off the center of the box front and back, about a 1/2" above the cleat but 2 to 3 inches below the top of the frame rest. I have plastic plugs to close up these upper entrances for the winter when it gets too cold out and I think there might be a lot of heat loss. They usually propalize up that area anyhow as needed for themselves. Thou I do install 1/8" hardware cloth stapled to the inside in the back. This is so when I lift my boxes up or off, looking only at the front of the hive to where I grip my hand on the cleat to the side away from holes I don't have to worry about crushing bees, possibly getting stung, or having their defensive pheromones go sour on me. I prefer not to wear gloves. I also have 3/4" inch bee ways on the sides and back of my bottom boards for the entrance bees so they have better ability to fan heat out and circulate fresh air into the to keep it cooler. I can always put different lengths of 3/4" wood reducers in case of robbing or when cold windy weather and rain sets in. So long comment but hope this information is useful to someone else out there. It's just something that works for me and the area I live in. Thanks for your short talking about heat in our hives here and needing to have a close abundant water source nearby. Hope you all are having a successful summer with your honeybees. 🐝
What about if temp is 120 f (45-50c) ?
Uninformative video (
How do you start and upkeep....do you clean the pin? How do you collect the honey?
Way too much talking over four minutes of listening to you, yap shut up and show your process
Thank you so much! i was thinking of having a beekeeping job, or just have a hive to make fresh honey for me, my family and my friends. this was soo useful! also, poor drone bees.....
Wow Thank you. I've just started keeping bees. But only one of my beehives have a 🐝 . How can I catch them?
Thank you. You are very helpful
Happy to help!
Ive had hell with hive Beatles this year. Ive treated the ground in my bee yard with grub killer, and put several swifter cloths on the frames tops, finally getting them under control. Didn't have much problem until I brought in a cutout from an oak tree. I was buisy at the time and didn't care for them as I should have, they got smiled out. A few weeks later I had large numbers of Beatles in all my hives. This is the reason I used the grub killer on the ground, won't help today but will help in the months ahead. I now have a bug zapper near my bee yard to control moth numbers. It's been a wet year after 3 years of drought and bugs have gone crazy.
the small hive beetle will takeover a hive very fast! I'm glad the grub killer works for you. It is something I forgot to talk about because I can't use it where my bees are. My hives are on other people's properties around the island. Having a screened bottom with oil pan below has really been a lifesaver for me.
Thank you so much for this guide. I'm in Colorado Springs and a first year beekeeper. Today we had scorcher at 90+ with humidity in the teens. My bees have drained multiple jars of syrup, they've been heavy on their water, and massive bearding at the hive entrance. This has been so informational!
You do know the east coast would envy us in the Rockies complaining about humidity getting close to 20%.😅
Oh yeah, I do rub it in when chatting with all of my friends and family that are still back east 🎉

Hi, I'm from Raiatea French polynesia. Are you alwys in Hawai?
Been here for the last 10 years :)
Amazing, thanks for your knowledge!
Hi miss one question can bees collect enough nectar and pollen from coconut trees so that they can be on a honey flow on that crop . Am from St. Lucia 🇱🇨 and there are a lot of coconut trees here.
I don't know how much nectar the coconut palm trees produce, but I do know that the bees LOVE them. Since the flowers are so high up it's hard to see if they're taking nectar or pollen, but I can hear the palms buzzing when I stand under them. My guess is that they must produce an okay amount of nectar because the bees I have by the ocean bring in a ton of honey when the Mesquite trees bloom. When that bloom is over, the palms are really all they have. The hives aren't bursting with honey like from the mesquite harvest, but they are stable for the rest of the year.
Thanks for your fantastic videos and great explanations! First month beekeeper here and your videos have been invaluable.
Wow! I’m surprised to here you’re leaving Hw. Will you keep on making videos? I hope you do.
I will definitely continue to make videos in PA.
@@BeekeepingMadeSimple awesome! You can do getting started again in bee keeping and I look forward to it.
I just got a nuc I’m totally new at this thank you for all your videos im learning a lot Where in the big island you located & do you offer tours or on person classes ?
I do not do tours or in-person classes anymore, but Big Island Bees does. They are in Kealakekua in South Kona. They have a fun tour with video and honey tasting.
Congratulationes, for your work, my dear Bee😊👍👍
These HISEA folks have reached out to me. How was your experience with them? They legit to work with? Thanks for the review, moms a bee keeper
They are! I actually wear them more than any other shoe at the moment :) They're a great boot. It took a little while to arrive and they expect you to make the video within a certain period of time, but they sent me a second free pair for my husband, which was also very kind of them.
@@BeekeepingMadeSimple Great to hear! I have a pair on the way, we shall see! Mom has three horizonal hives, Bees are fascinating
OK so the Brawny dine-a-max has been discontinued and are not available anywhere. I am told that the product has been re-branded as Dixie H700. Is this true? A box of 150 towels of the H700 costs a whopping $72 bucks. This is probably not worth risking $72 bucks unless it is confirmed that it is really the same dine-a-max product. Has anyone tried them??
Great nice clear info there thx
Thanks for this video. How do you work without full coverup and not get stinged.
17:27 17:31
Thank you so much for this video. It's a great addition to what my local beekeepers in CO have to say! <3
One of the most concentrated sources of high quality information about bee keeping on the web. Thank you for this.
Thank you Miss, your video was very informative. I was very pleased last year, when some bees moved into a bird nest box in my garden and I was wondering if it is likely that bees will use it again, unchanged, or whether it would need to be spring cleaned of whatever remains in it from the previous occupancy! Please can you advise? Incidentally, I live in UK. Thank you.
In one of your video you talked about .Putting in empty racks in between other racks. But i thought the queen was suppose to be by the brood rack. Im new to bee keepering. We have a top bar hive. Bought a nuc 2 months ago. Us it ok to put empty racks in between my other racks?
A bee escape put between that problem box and the one below a day before the surgery would have cleared most of the bees from the problem box.
It would have! This hive was on a client's property over an hour from my house and there are no beekeeping supply places in our state, so it would have been at least a week or two before I would have been able to do that. 3 day shipping does not exist for the big island, BUT a great idea if you have a bee escape on hand.
